but what I am sure of is that throughout the years we progress, we evolve, or, lets just say, we change.
One of the things that has a stronger influence on our modifications is the people that surround us since we are babies: our parents, our teachers, our brothers or sisters and our friends.
It is amazing how classmates, workmates, roommates, neighbours, and so on can make us change the way we speak, we behave, we think and even the way we look.
You met this person years ago, at some random place, you connected with him, then you separate but kept the communication going on by mail, by letters, by phone, whatever: you knew about each other for a long time until the day you finally see him again. But he has changed; so much. What happened to your old fellow, you wonder. Nothing. It isn't time that changed him, not even his circumstances, or just a little: it is the people he met while your were meeting some other people what stretched the distance between both of you.
The scariest thing of all that is the fact that we don't really get to choose who we spent our time with. Chance does all the work for us. We can get very lucky and live surrounded by well-hearted people that eventually will become our friends or the same throw of a dice can set us up with miserable, boring and shallow humans, because they also exist.
The only thing that is in our power is trying to guess who we really want to become one with. Because that is really what it is all about. We will at some point become similar to those that we spend our lives with, the partners fortune chose for us: they will be us and we will be them. It is not like sappy cheesy movies, songs and books say it happens, nor it is like the soul-mate kind of thing Plato talked about in his Phaedrus: we don't turn into one soul, we don't live happily forever after with that person so destined to be;
we just travel along, cross paths, share our times with others, hoping to keep finding one of the many amazing people that inhabit the Earth, to grow on them, to grow with them, to become better and live happier thanks to them (thanks to us).
and as simple as it seems, it is: we just need to choose well.
